POC 1 Kimchi (Korea) vs. Pickle (Vietnam)

Written by Do Thi Hong Dung

Pieces of culture- One of the greatest enhancement training projects of Hanoikids club started its journey cheerfully and successfully on Sunday March 28th 2010.

The cultural topic chosen was CUISINE: KIMCHI vs. PICKLE. KIMCHI represents the cuisine tradition of Korea while PICKLE is a popular dish in Vietnam’s daily life.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon when nearly 100 guests, at various ages and from different backgrounds, gathered together to enjoy the first show of PIECES OF CULTURE. The atmosphere was warmed up quickly with an amazing clip introducing Vietnam’s and Korea’s beauties and attractiveness.

The program included three main parts: LISTEN, WATCH and EXPERIENCE. Each part gradually brought audience through the small trip of exploring these two dishes: KIMCHI and PICKLE.

In the first part, LISTEN, guest speakers coming from two countries: Kim Yi Yeon- a beautiful Korean teacher and Pham Vu Thuy Chi- an elegant

Vietnamese student studying in Australia, have shared some interesting information about these foods. It was an open conversation about cuisine between the guest speakers and the audiences. Indeed, Vietnamese audiences were so curious about this amazing topic that they asked guest speakers a number of challenging questions, which made LISTEN a truly useful part helping people to get good understanding about these two delicious dishes.

Part two named WATCH did an incredibly good job in cheering up the participants. Two funny clips made by special actors and actresses of our club have shown unlimited creativity of Hanoi kids. One clip showed people the way to make typical Vietnamese pickle while the other led the audiences through a difficult “journey to love” of a poor guy, in which he had to find out three important ingredients of KIMCHI for his beloved. "Team clip" has wisely made the viewers eager to help this guy making KIMCHI.

And part three, EXPERIENCE, came naturally with the help of Ms. Kim Yi Yeon and some other guests in order to show people how Korean make their

traditional and popular dish - KIMCHI. The most expected part must be mentioned here was when people had a chance to taste KIMCHI. Also, the following game in a special format of “PIECES OF CULTURE” brought the hall a truly joyful and alive atmosphere.

Just after a not-so-long show on Sunday afternoon, Hanoikids’ members and youngsters had a great opportunity to not only explore Vietnamese and Korean culinary cultures but also practise their English in such a unique and fascinating way.

To the Organizing team, thank you very much for holding this amazing cultural event.

To all the audiences, thank you very much for coming and joining with us in this opening show of PIECES OF CULTURE.

Hopefully, this will open up a new trend of exploring and experiencing cultural aspects of Vietnam and other foreign countries.
